Warm stone, long tables, and light that arrives late and stays. The direction people mean when they say "Italian summer" — and it is rarely Italian.
What is Mediterranean summer design?
A warm, sun-bleached language — terracotta, olive, ochre and chalk against warm stone, with informal type and a long-table sensibility. Its defining quality is heat: colours look as if they have been in strong sun, and the layout feels unhurried rather than formal.

What actually defines it.
- Warm neutrals as the ground — stone, chalk, sand — with colour arriving as accents rather than fields.
- Hand over machine. A drawn line, an uneven edge, a painted mark. Precision reads as northern here.
- The long table as the organising idea. Menus, place cards and table pieces matter more in this direction than the invitation does, because the meal is the event.
- Late light. Dinner at nine, warm shadow. If your event ends before sunset this is not quite the right language.

"Italian summer" is usually not Italian. The look people describe with that phrase is most often Iberian or Greek — whitewash, terracotta, olive. Worth naming the actual place, because Milan and Mallorca produce completely different designs and only one of them is what most people mean.
