How do you word a first communion invitation?

The parents invite, the child is named in full, and the parish and Mass time are given exactly. Then the celebration afterwards, separately. Many families now let the child do the inviting — "I am making my First Holy Communion" — which suits the occasion and is entirely correct.

Should we mention gifts?

No. Gifts are traditional and unprompted; asking changes the occasion.

How formal should it be?

Less formal than a wedding, more than a birthday. It is a sacrament followed by a family lunch, and the card should feel like both.

How far ahead?

Three to four weeks. Parish dates are usually fixed well in advance, so you can prepare early.
