Including the two versions people always need — the surprise, and the one that never prints the number.
How do you plan a milestone birthday party?
Save-the-dates three months out for anything large, invitations five to six weeks ahead — these compete with weddings and holidays for the same weekends. The number is optional: "a celebration for Marion" is complete and correct. For a surprise, put the instruction and the arrival time above everything else.

The pieces.
- The invitation — and for a surprise, the arrival instruction outranks the occasion on it.
- Menu and place cards — for a seated dinner, which most milestone parties are.
- Table names — an opportunity: decades, places they have lived, songs from the year.
- A guest book or memory card — the piece that outlives the evening.
- Welcome signage — the first thing guests see.
Ask before printing the age. Plenty of people mind, and the invitation is not the place to find out. "A celebration for Marion" reads as elegant rather than evasive, and nobody notices the omission.
