How do you plan an engagement party?
Set the date three to four months out, then send invitations three to four weeks ahead — this is a party, not a ceremony, and a longer lead time is not needed. The one rule that matters: everyone invited to the engagement party must also be invited to the wedding. Guests read the first invitation as a signal about the second.

The pieces.
- The invitation — the only essential.
- A welcome sign — worth it if the party is at a venue rather than a home.
- Nothing else, honestly. Menus and place cards belong at a seated dinner; an engagement party is usually standing. If yours is seated, treat it as a dinner party.
The mistake to avoid. If your wedding guest list will be smaller than your engagement list, keep the engagement party small too. An engagement guest who does not receive a wedding invitation will notice, and it is far harder to explain afterwards than to prevent now.
