Modern
editorial.

Borrowed from magazines rather than from stationery — which is exactly why it stands out in a pile of invitations.

What is editorial invitation design?

A layout language borrowed from magazines: an asymmetric grid, a strong typographic hierarchy, and text set as columns rather than centred stacks. It reads as considered and contemporary, and because almost no invitations are laid out this way, it is immediately distinguishable in a stack of them.

01

What actually defines it.

  • A grid, and left alignment. Centring is the default of stationery; a grid is the default of editorial. That one switch does most of the work.
  • Contrast of scale. One very large element against several very small ones — the magazine cover logic.
  • Type doing the expressing. Not an ornament in sight; the voice comes entirely from the faces and how they are set.
  • Room for information. This is the direction that handles a lot of detail gracefully, which makes it strong for multi-day and corporate events.

Common questions

Does this work for a wedding?
Yes, and it is under-used there. It suits couples who find traditional stationery unlike them, and it handles a multi-day schedule better than a centred layout does.
Is it cold?
It can be. Warmth comes from the paper and from one carefully chosen warm element — a colour, a texture, a hand-drawn mark against all that structure.
Does it date?
Less than most. Editorial layout has been recognisably itself for eighty years; it is trends within it that date.

See it across a whole event.

Editorial holds up best across many pieces, because the grid gives every one of them the same spine. The showroom shows these commissions complete.
