The most requested direction in the category, and the one most often reduced to a border of flowers around some type.
What is garden romantic design?
A soft visual language — painted or drawn botanicals, warm neutrals, informal type — held together by a structure that is not soft at all. The difference between this working and not is whether the botanical is a considered mark or a frame: a wreath around centred text is the version everyone has seen.

What actually defines it.
- Specific plants, not generic foliage. The strongest work draws what is actually growing at that venue in that month. A meadow in June and a walled garden in September are different pictures.
- A structure underneath. Soft imagery needs firm typography, or the whole thing dissolves. The best garden work has a spine you can see if you squint.
- Restraint in the palette. Three or four values, one of them doing almost all the work.
- Material warmth — uncoated, textured, sometimes a deckle. Gloss kills this direction instantly.

Common questions
Is this only for spring and summer?
No. A walled garden in October — seed heads, bare structure, russet — is one of the strongest versions of this direction and almost nobody asks for it.
Watercolour or line drawing?
Both work; they say different things. Watercolour reads warmer and softer, line reads more considered and prints far better at small sizes.
Will it look dated?
The generic version already does. Work drawn from the actual venue does not, because it was never following a trend.
