Peter & Melissa

A surrealist arctic universe where warmth insists on existing — pink flamingos at a hotel desk, a tall ship sailing through ice, a pink castle in the middle of nowhere. Two narrative frames for one world.

Where it started

A surrealist arctic universe where warmth insists on existing — pink flamingos at a hotel desk, a tall ship sailing through ice, a pink castle in the middle of nowhere. Two narrative frames for one world.

The humour is never winking; it is earnest. That earnestness is the key.

L’Hôtel du Bout du Monde

The venue becomes an absurdist grand hotel stranded in the middle of an arctic landscape — white floors, pink tiled front desk, navy livery, impeccable service for a party that should not logically exist here. Guests check in. Staff wear navy-and-rose hotel uniforms. The couple are the proprietors of this impossible place.

The material, as delivered

Stock Natural uncoated
Print2-colour · navy + rose
FinishUncoated · tactile

Quoted from this suite's own production spec — the stock the invitation was actually printed on. Surfaces are rendered from that spec, not photographed.

What this world had still to settle
  • Whether guests will play along with checking in. The conceit only works if they do, and the paper cannot make them — the staff, the uniforms and the front desk have to carry it.
  • Whether an impossible hotel needs to look impossible. Impeccable service for a party that should not logically exist is the joke; a suite that is merely elegant loses it, and one that signals the joke too hard becomes a theme night.
  • Whether the couple as proprietors survives the paper. It is the sharpest idea here and it changes who the invitation is from, which is a question about wording rather than design.
  • Whether two accent colours can share a card. Arctic rose leads and terracotta sits in the photographs; a door colour that appears only in pictures is a fourth value nobody has committed to.

La Grande Traversée

The engagement as departure point: two people setting out on a grand, improbable journey together, and the party is their bon voyage. The venue is a ship’s ballroom — navy hull, brass lanterns, pink sails rigged overhead as a canopy installation. Guests are the crew and passengers of this impossible arctic vessel.

La Grande TraverséeThe warmth is rigged overhead — so navy can own the ground and rose can lead on it.

What this world had still to settle
  • Whether a ship's ballroom can be built or only drawn. Pink sails rigged overhead as a canopy is an installation, and the suite is written as though it exists.
  • Whether guests as crew is warmer or colder than guests as guests. Assigning everyone a role is either the generous version of this world or the one that makes people self-conscious.
  • Whether navy as the ground leaves room for the rose. The hull owns the surface here, and rose has to lead on it — the same pairing the other world runs the opposite way round.
  • Whether departure is the right note for an engagement. A bon voyage is a beautiful frame and it is also about leaving, at a party about staying.
