Chrome Everything

An evening where every surface reflects possibility. Two readings of the same material — one liquid, one frozen.

Where it started

An evening where every surface reflects possibility. Two readings of the same material — one liquid, one frozen.

The night is not a backdrop. It is the material.

Direction A

Liquid Obsidian

Chrome crumples like liquid poured across obsidian surfaces; crystal formations erupt raw from the table as geological events, not decorations. The dark is the ground, and the light is an intrusion.

What this world had still to settle
  • Whether crumpled chrome can be printed at all. Liquid poured across obsidian is a rendering; on flat uncoated board it becomes a grey photograph unless the stock or the finish does something, and neither has been chosen.
  • Whether the crystals stay geological and not decorative. Erupting raw from the table as events rather than ornament is the rule, and the moment one is placed for balance it is an ornament.
  • Whether light as an intrusion survives nine pieces. The dark is the ground everywhere; on the smallest pieces there is not enough field for anything to intrude into.
  • Whether a display serif belongs in a world with no warmth. Cormorant against Space Grotesk is the pairing; the serif is the one humane thing on a card built to feel machined.

Frozen Light

The same chrome, but at dawn instead of midnight. Pale bone and silver mist hold the room; ice crystal carries the only colour. Where Liquid Obsidian is weight, Frozen Light is suspension — the moment before the thaw.

Anything that reads as night
What this world had still to settle
  • Whether dawn reads as a different world or the same one lightened. Same chrome, other hour, is the pitch — and inverting a palette is the easiest way to make two worlds that are really one.
  • Whether suspension can be photographed. The moment before the thaw is a state, not a subject, and every picture of it is a picture of something else.
  • Whether ice crystal is a colour or a highlight. It is named as the only colour and it lives in the photographs rather than the layout, which means it may never print as ink at all.
  • Whether pale bone holds obsidian type at small sizes. It is the highest-contrast pair in either world and also the one that shows every mark the press leaves.
The decision, as they saw it

Midnight, or dawn.
