Florist

There are no florals in this suite at all — not drawn, not photographed, not implied. That is a stated rule of the design and it is unusual, so it is worth knowing before you plan anything that has to sit beside the stationery. What you bring to the room is yours; the paper will not echo it, and it is not meant to.

Venue / stylist

The palette, and the ornament rule: no borders, frames, corner devices or rules boxing anything in. The lobby is small and dark — walnut, one marble desk, brass mail slots. Work with that rather than lighting it out.

Photographer

The stationery list is the shot list. Worth a frame: the engraved impression in raking light (it only reads at an angle), the tissue interleaving as a card is lifted out, and the hand-addressed envelope. No photographs of the couple appear on any printed piece, by their instruction.

Caterer / planner

Dinner at eight, seated, three courses. The menu is English only — the two Italian dish names stay in Italian and are not to be translated. Late in the evening the kitchen sends espresso and the torta della nonna, cut by William's mother.

The visual identity at a glance

A cream sheet, one brown ink, and a red that appears only where a second hand has written. The red is not a highlight and not decoration: it marks the moment somebody added a name that was not supposed to be there. The names are set enormous and everything else stands quietly at the edges.

Match to the printed piece, not to these squares. These are screen values. The suite is engraved — the ink stands up off the sheet and reads darker at an angle than it does flat on. Elizabeth is a paper conservator and works on nineteenth-century correspondence and bindings; she will notice stock, and she will notice a script that has been stretched or faked. Ask for a printed piece before matching anything.

Stationery arriving

Counts are 140 guests plus a proofing margin. “One per household” is the envelope count, not the guest count. The table count is not fixed yet — confirm it with the studio before that piece goes to print.

Day-of notes

The register leaf

On 25 September 2024 Elizabeth signed the register in this lobby on her way into the wrong wedding — right hotel, wrong week. William was the night manager and noticed the name matched nobody on either list. He did not cross it out; he wrote his own name underneath so the page would not look like a mistake. That leaf is the single most important object in this wedding, and the whole suite is built from it. If it is displayed, display it as a document: flat, unframed by ornament, nothing propped on it.

The writing

The script is a real written hand at a real weight. It is never stretched, never condensed, never scaled non-uniformly to fit a space. If you are producing anything additional and the words do not fit, use fewer words.

No ornament

Not a house preference — the client's instruction, twice. No borders, frames, corner devices or rules boxing the copy in. “If there is a flourish it should be a flourish that happened because someone was writing quickly, not one that was drawn on afterwards.”

Eight o'clock, seated, three courses. Menu in English; the two Italian dish names stay Italian. Espresso and torta della nonna late, cut by William's mother.

Material

Engraved from a hand-cut die on cotton rag, tissue interleaving, envelopes addressed by hand in the same ink. Nothing metallic, no wax seal, no lamination.
