Brunch for Marisol

If you are reading only one part

Whoever prints it
Uncoated natural 350gsm warm white, four-colour flat. The valance is cut for real on the invitation and the favour tag, with a butter backing sheet showing through the wave — it is never printed to look cut. The die is a hand-cut steel rule: an irregular wave cannot be rotary-cut, so a rotary quote is a quote for the wrong process.
Anyone setting type
Words live on the butter field, never on the coral. Petrol on butter measures 6.32 to 1; petrol on the cloth is 3.19 — fine for something large, not for anything anyone has to read. That was tested and rejected, and the place cards were rebuilt after a first pass put a 16pt name on coral. One ink, petrol. There is no second ink.
Caterer and front of house
Name the dishes properly on the menu. Half the table has never eaten ube and half has never eaten a financier — the menu is doing real work, not decoration.
Anyone tempted to make it a wedding
Please do not. No cream, no ivory, no calligraphy set as paragraphs, no florals of any kind, no gold foil, nothing muted or dusty. In Teodora's own words: nothing that looks like it's apologising for being cheerful.

The visual identity at a glance

The awning, as a system

Morning butter#ECE7A4 the field — where every word lives
Petrol#1D5670 the one ink, the garden's own paint
Awning coral#F2856F the cloth — a border, not a page
Faded coral#F9AC98 the stripe the sun got to
Powder blue#C4DBE7 rationed to about an eighth

The measured share of a card's surface:

field 61%
cloth 23.4%
blue 12.7%
ink

Blue is rationed on purpose. It went to a fifth of the surface at one point and the card read nautical, which is a different event entirely. And the ink is a hairline of the whole thing — under two per cent — which is why nothing is allowed to compete with it.

Typefaces: Bodoni Moda for the names and the numbers, Jost for everything a guest reads at the table. There is one script accent in the wider suite and it is bound to single words — never a paragraph.

Match to the printed piece, not to these squares. The real reference is better than any of this: the awning itself, and the striping the family has re-ordered twice from the same San Francisco shop.

Day-of notes

Notes for the day

One piece has to be worth keeping. Marisol keeps everything, and Teodora asked that at least one thing here be worth putting in a drawer — a keepsake rather than a place setting that goes out with the napkins. The die-cut favour tag is that piece. Treat its trim and its backing sheet as finished work, not as an offcut.
The awning
Marisol's mother sewed it in 1974. The family has eaten under it every Mother's Day since. It has been re-canvassed twice rather than replaced, both times with the same striping from the same San Francisco awning shop. The deep soft scallop of the valance is the first thing anyone sees from the gate, and it is the reason the paper looks the way it does.
The light
At eleven in the morning the sun comes through the canvas and lands butter-yellow on the tablecloth. That is where the field colour comes from — it is observed, not chosen.
How it should read
Hand-made rather than machine-perfect. Everything else at that table is, and a piece that looks machined will be the only thing in the garden that does.
Material
Uncoated natural 350gsm warm white, four-colour flat, hand-cut steel rule die, butter backing sheet. No foil of any kind.

Please do not

  • No ivory or cream grounds.
  • No calligraphy script set as whole paragraphs.
  • No florals of any kind — no roses, no peonies, no botanical wreaths, no pressed flowers.
  • Nothing that reads as a wedding suite.
  • No gold foil. No muted or dusty palettes.
  • No greeting-card sentiment, and no hearts.
  • No body copy on the coral cloth — it measures 3.19 to 1 there.

Teodora's own list. Her brief in one line: loud colour, quiet manners — something our mother would actually keep.
