Nell & Tobias
Vendor guide · Marchgate Walled Garden, Suffolk
If you are reading only one part
- Whoever prints it
- One ink. Pantone 2145 C, or the nearest you stock — for the whole
job. Single-colour lithography across the suite, letterpress permitted on the invitation
alone, 300gsm uncoated warm-cream mounting card. No second pass of any kind: no foil, no
coating, no varnish. Total ink coverage stays under 22%.
- Anyone reproducing a drawing
- One uniform line. No hatching, no tonal shading, no
fill. Where something sits back it is the same cobalt at a lighter tint — the strength
varies, the hue never does. Never thicken or roughen a line to make it look hand-drawn:
the bride draws specimen plates for a living and reads stroke weight professionally, so a
"hand-drawn" effect is the one thing she will spot instantly.
- Anyone setting type
- The written hand appears only where the couple speak in their
own voice. Every fact — dates, times, addresses, names on a place card — is set in the
serif. One drawing per piece, centred on the spine.
- Anyone tempted to soften it
- Please do not. No watercolour florals, no
eucalyptus-and-kraft, no copperplate calligraphy, no navy and gold, and no photography anywhere
in this world.

The visual identity at a glance
One ink, and its tints
Cobalt — the ink#2A5C9A · PMS 2145 C
The permitted tints — the same ink, laid
lighter. There is no fourth colour and no grey:
The constraint is the bride's, not the studio's. Nell asked, unprompted, whether her wedding
could print in one colour the way her herbarium plates do. Every decision on this sheet follows
from that question, which is why none of it is negotiable in the usual way.
Two faces do the work, and a third is held back.
Nell & Tobias
Yellowtail — the written hand, used only where the couple speak in their own voice.
Fraunces — every fact, and the signature in the corner, in italic.
A letterspaced sans is permitted for the single action line, and
nothing else.
Match to the printed piece, not to these squares. This is a spot colour on uncoated stock
and no screen shows that honestly — hold the drawdown.

Day-of notes
Notes
- The signature
- Nell has drawn a few thousand specimen plates for other people's
publications and signed every one in the corner where nobody looks. This is the first one
that is hers. The corner signature is set in the serif italic and it is not decoration.
- How the suite moves
- It opens with one object alone — the save the date is a single
branch — widens to the whole table at the invitation, then narrows piece by piece through
the day until a place card is one name and one gesture. Do not even that out.
- The azulejo
- It may appear. It may not be used as a wallpaper repeat or as a
border pattern.
- Reading distance
- Each drawing is sized to how far away its piece is read from — a
place card at arm's length, signage across a garden. The line weight is constant; only the
scale changes.
- Material
- Single-colour litho, letterpress on the invitation alone, 300gsm uncoated
warm-cream. No foil, no coating, no second pass.
Please do not
- No second ink anywhere in the suite.
- No hatching, tonal shading or fill inside a drawing.
- No azulejo as a wallpaper repeat or a border pattern.
- No photography anywhere in this world.
- No watercolour florals. No eucalyptus-and-kraft. No copperplate calligraphy.
- No navy and gold.
- No foil, no coating, no second production pass.
- No line thickened or roughened to look “hand-drawn”.
Nell's own list, and her standard: “I would like it to
look like something a person made, not something a shop sold.”
