Your event identity — one panel off the wall

Everything you have been sent is built from a very small number of decisions. They are written down here so that anything you make yourselves — a sign on the loggia, a card on the grill table, a marker on the wall — still belongs to the same afternoon.

The colours

Five, and every one of them is flat. There are no gradients in this suite, no shadows and no airbrushing: if a thing is coloured, it is one colour, printed once. White is the tile and it is the ground of everything; the deep azulejo carries every word; blue, green and yellow are the panel, and they are laid down as areas, never as type.

The two typefaces

Opening Match Watch Party
Hanken Grotesk — the one word on a panel, the host-city names, anything set large and flat.
The Bittencourt house and garden, Alhambra Circle
Fraunces — the reading — times, dishes, directions, the small print.

The one mark

The invitation is one panel prised off a tiled wall — the azulejo panels of Rio and Niterói, where a wall holds one small picture per square and only means anything whole. The mark carries no year. That is deliberate and it is the point: it has to survive being used again every four years, the way a 1970 wall chart is still on a wall in Niterói.

Flat screen-printed spot colour on rigid heavyweight board with a painted edge, and a lined envelope. Screen print lays each colour down thick and even, which is the whole reason the palette is flat — a printer offering to “lift” it with a gradient or a soft shadow has misunderstood the object.

Using it yourselves

This is your event's visual identity. If you make anything yourselves, use these exact colours and these two typefaces — the restraint is the design.

The colours, to copy

#FFFFFF · #2E63D6 · #14306B · #3E9E43 · #F5C400

Tile white — the panel itself · Azulejo blue · Deep azulejo — every word · Field green · Ouro yellow, in that order.

The two typefaces, and where to get them

Hanken Grotesk and Fraunces are both free and open-source, and both are on Google Fonts — search the name, install the family, or pick it straight from the font menu in Canva, Google Docs or Word. You do not need a licence and you do not need to ask us.

5 rules, if you make something new
  1. One flat colour per shape. No gradient, no drop shadow, no airbrushing, anywhere.
  2. White is the tile and the ground of everything. Blue, green and yellow are areas, never type.
  3. The deep azulejo carries every word. If it is language, it is that colour.
  4. The mark never carries the year — it is meant to come out again in four years.
  5. Hanken Grotesk for anything large and flat; Fraunces for anything you actually read.
